Reviewing The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas

The Spanish Love Deception book by Elena Armas

What's the Story of The Spanish Love Deception?

In The Spanish Love Deception, Catalina Martín desperately needs a date to her sister’s wedding. Especially since her little white lie about her American boyfriend has spiralled out of control. Now everyone she knows—including her ex and his fiancée—will be there and eager to meet him.

Before starting the review, I’d like to mention that I’ve been writing this continually while reading the book, hence the shift of tension and impression. I’d like to also add that TSLD isn’t my first romance, and that is probably where the slight inconvenience is. I read this book during Spring, and it did actually make me miss Summer as the major vibes are very vacation-like.

How It Started...

Enemies to lovers at its finest; coworkers that are lost between misunderstandings, ego, and everyday tension ⚡.

A deception, and that’s kind of obvious from the title alone. I’m not bothered by Aaron, the MMC(male main character,) but I just hate how he’s described as a wide-shoulders creature that has blue eyes and is ”giantly” tall every single time. If you have a really bad memory, you won’t struggle remembering how he looked like, because the writer will keep reminding you of that in every single page. However, I somehow started liking Aaron since the auctions, and I found myself giggling and sometimes barely squealing whenever he snaps back with some sweet gentle words that weren’t expected. But then again bored with how much thoughts Catalina has. She never stops giving too many details about mundane things, and don’t get me wrong, WE LOVE DETAILS, but just not too much about how differently you can describe a tall guy.

But...

OKAY! Hold on a second, Aaron is actually a sweetheart, but you only get to feel it at almost the end of the book. Around 60% of the book you start getting to better perceive his personality through his actions, and certainly not through Lina’s description/thoughts. I must admit I wasn’t expecting to like the book at all, since it got boring at some point because of all that stubbornness and stupidity the female main character keeps acting on, but then the male main character saves the day *WINK WINK*

I’d give the author bonus points just for the plot alone, despite it being predictable, but the tension building is there, and for a light read, it is enough to make you enjoy your read.

How It Ended...

The storyline is pretty much obvious, but I definitely think it should’ve started right in the middle, and end right where it ended. Such a shame, as the book had so many tropes I like: enemies to lovers, fake dating, forced proximity, family issues. I mean it had everything to be a really good romcom, but the female main character, Catalina, is a bit (too) immature… Don’t come for me, on my defense, and as an explanation, I’d say she’s stuck in the past where her scandal happened (NO SPOILERS), and doesn’t wanna be over it. That’s how she ended up behaving the way she does.

What I Think About The Spanish Love Deception:

Overall, The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas is a hit or a miss. You either really like it, or just happen to slightly hate it and want to throw it off the window. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Luckily, I didn’t do both. It’s just sitting there on my shelf, probably will never be picked again. I feel like a lot of bookworms would disagree, but I’ve read Samantha’s review from samanthakilford.com and I definitely agree.

Will I Be Reading to Elena Armas Again?

Probably not; it’s been a while now since I’ve read The Spanish Love Deception, and I didn’t feel the need nor the urge to read the second part The American Roommate Experiment. BUT! That doesn’t necessarily mean I am not going to in the future. That’s the thing about Elena’s style, I’m not mad at it, like I could really read more if it was written like the second half of the book, but something tells me it’s not gonna be entirely that way. One Last Thing...

I’ve pledged an unofficial oath to have a section within all my reviews dedicated to beginners, or bookworms that are trying a new genre. If you’re new to romance books, I’d like to tell you that this book is a good start; it sets the pace for the cutesy side of a romcom, where nothing is majorly serious, and all that matters is having a great time reading this, or in my case, a good pause from a previous strong, heart-wrenching read. Enjoy!
